Republican Convention, Bush Speech, Sep 2 2004

The Republican Convention convention to select their candidate for the presidency concluded on September 2 2004, with a speech by George Bush. It was the capstone on a successful and impressive convention for the party faithful gathered in New York's Madison Square Garden. While it was on, large numbers of protesters were in the streets expressing their opposition to Bush policies. But the president was in good form.

Bush came to the podium at 10:10 pm local, and the speech lasted just over an hour (02:10 to 03:12 GMT, July 30). The data from this period show no substantial trend, in contrast to the result for Kerry's speech a month earlier. This example indicates no departure from expectation, in line with many political events we have examined in the past.
