The rare occasion of a chronological palindrome, the date 11-11-11,
extended by many to the palindromic time 11:11 (AM and PM!) seemed a natural event
in the categories of celebrations and meditations. It was suggested either explicitly
or implicitly by a great many people, especially those who intended to lead or
be involved in a group or mass meditation.
Since there were many planned virtual gatherings around the world, but especially in the
West, it seemed appropriate to specify the whole 24-hour UTC day as the event. An alternative
would be to use the epoch averaging employed for New Years since many people were focused on
the 11:11 time of day and explicitly envisioned a wave of meditations flowing around the
world as the time approached in each timezone.
In any case, the result for the 24 hour day specification is
Chisquare 86348 on 86400 df for p = 0.549 and Z = -0.124. This is
not a strong result, and the history of the day's data shown in the graph does not seem to
give evidence of a substantial deviation.
It is important to keep in mind that we have only a tiny
statistical effect, so that it is always hard to distinguish
signal from noise. This means that every "success" might be
largely driven by chance, and every "null" might include a real
signal overwhelmed by noise. In the long run, a real effect can
be identified only by patiently accumulating replications of
similar analyses.
